Marine Magnet Schools Named as Nationally Certified Schools

Magnet Schools of America (MSA), the national association for magnet and theme-based schools, named New River Middle School and South Broward High School a nationally certified magnet school. New River Middle School and South Broward High School were among 38 schools located in 12 states (AL, CA, CT, FL, GA, LA, MN, NC, NV, SC, TN, and TX) to successfully complete a rigorous nine-month evaluation process.  Schools demonstrate through evidence, reflection and strategic action that it has established the best practices entailed in the Magnet School Standards of Excellence. “The certification process validates the highest caliber schools and programs we have in public education. It has been very encouraging for MSA evaluators to see the outstanding curriculum, professional educators, and learning environments that are provided for students in these magnet schools,” said Kelly Bucherie, Director for Magnet School Leadership, Magnet Schools of America.

At New River Middle School, marine magnet students participate in an exploratory curriculum focusing on South Florida's waterways, nautical systems, maritime businesses and industries, and ocean sciences. South Broward High School’s Marine Maritime Magnet Program exposes students to career choices in the maritime industry, and encourages environmental stewardship for coral reefs, sharks and the ocean. Most importantly, teachers and staff seek to instill a reverence for inimitable maritime culture. South Broward High School students have the opportunity to become the maritime community of the future.
